I recall the story showed its nasty leg during the campaign and Trump answered it in his inimitable open and authentic manner. He closed off the explanation in typical fashion, saying “everything is fine”.
The gist of it (I think) was about his parents will, the family’s efforts to care for Fred and Donald’s no-small-role in the Trump family business enterprise, of which held no particular interest to Fred, who was not healthy.
