Used to be that we thought a Big Brother that would monitor our every move and breathe down our necks was a dystopian fantasy. It turns out that Big Brother has arisen, and it bears many names, among which are Twitter and Facebook. It’s probably long past time that laws were passed dictating to social media networks that the names and likenesses of individuals who forbid it must be erased from their databases on pain of large fines to be paid to the individuals affected.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.
It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.
The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
