I know it's fiction, but John Jakes' "Kent Family Chronicles" is one of the best I've read. I love historical fiction, weaving common people in with the titans of American history.
I also learned more about Texas from reading John Michener's novel.

Look for talks on various subjects by Victor Davis Hanson on YouTube. Lectures on Civil War subjects by Professor Gary Gallagher of UVA are also very good and informative.
