I don't think it's any different today than it was 30 years ago when I was this young man's age. A lot of men go through "dry spells" as we called it back then. They just don't have their game or swagger yet and behave awkwardly around females.
Problem today, is so many young men's views on sex have been skewed by endless streams of internet pornography, leading to the belief that every girl around them screws anyone and everyone on a whim and when they're not getting laid, they take it extrememly personally.
