I have heard that there have been meetings, going back a year or more, between top military officials, as well as separate meetings between lower officers and the like, discussing when/how to defy the President. I believe, in fact, it was a FReeper in the military who attended one such meeting and was shocked by it.

In 1974, Defense Secretary Schlesinger and Secretary of State Kissinger worked to isolate President Nixon from direct access to the military. Nixon was a friend of the Marine Corps commandant, and it was feared he was going to use the Marines to protect him from impeachment. Schlesinger arranged to have the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions to prevent any action by the Marines. He further told top military officers to disobey any orders from the President.

We may be seeing the replay of military mutiny this year.
