My advise is KISS, a nice little revolver. .357 magnum, something easy to conceal and will work guaranteed in a panic if you pull the trigger.

Good choice in pistol. I would also suggest that if it's your first time with a hand gun, especially a .357, use .38 cal bullets first. The weight of the pistol and the lower recoil of the .38 round won't make you flinch.
