Three New Journey Members Announced by Neal Schon
Ultimate Classic Rock ^ | May 23, 2020 | Matthew Wilkening

Founding guitarist Neal Schon took to Twitter late tonight to announce that Randy Jackson and Narada Michael Walden will become the band's new bass player and drummer, respectively. He also confirmed the addition of a sixth member, keyboardist/vocalist Jason Derlatka. The trio join Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and vocalist Arnel Pineda.

This will be a return engagement for longtime American Idol judge Jackson, who was a member of Journey from 1985 through 1987, appearing on 1986's Raised on Radio. Walden is a renowned songwriter, singer and producer who has drummed in Mahavishnu Orchestra and alongside Jeff Beck, Tommy Bolin and Robert Fripp.

Schon actually first publicly welcomed Derlatka as a new bandmate back in November, when he tweeted that the keyboardist and vocalist would take part in a benefit concert in Nashville with the guitarist and Cain.

Journey's former rhythm section was fired earlier this year. Ross Valory played bass for Journey from 1973 until 1985 then from 1995 until earlier this year. Steve Smith had served three stints as the group's drummer, beginning in 1978. Court documents filed by a lawyer representing Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain accused the duo of launching an "ill-conceived corporate coup d'etat" in an effort to take control of the band's name.

A little music news for FR’s classic rock contingent. Most likely disappointing for long time Journey fans, especially these of us who wanted to see Schon’s reunion with Greg Rollie and Dean Castronova made official again, after the Journey Through Time project was shut down by the label last year. Check out YouTube for some Journey Through Time vids if you missed them at the time.

Journey Through Time was amazing....I don’t think the back catalog ever had gotten that much love and respect since Cain came aboard.

The “official” Journey is a shell of its former self.

Journey is going through what many Legacy Bands experience. Long time members drop out or are politely put out,and the overall sound changes with emphasis on a different kind of sound.

Such groups include Chicago, Moody Blues, Temptations. Foreigner Jefferson Starship and the Beach Boys.

Looks like Paula White’s husband is still in the band.

I’m frankly pleased to hear that Randy Jackson is healthy enough to go back on the road. The last few times I’ve seen him he wasn’t looking too good, Dog.
