Just read the Wiki, USS Bristol was a late bloomer in WWII (as you already know).
Indeed, she was a subtype of the Gearing Class that had a section welded into her so she was a bit longer...
My dad was her XO, and they were on station in the waning of the Cuban Missile Crisis...
As a kid, I thought she was a great looking ship. Loved the class...
