No the goal is not herd immunity. They aren't saying that's the goal because it's NOT the goal.
The lock downs provided:
- Time to test treatments like HCQ + Zinc, Remdemivir and others.
- Time to get PPE production ramp.
- Flattened the curve so hospitals weren't overwhelmed.
- Time to study the virus.
- Time to develop treatment protocols including different ventilation techniques from tradtional ARDS, anti blood clotting therapy, anti-inflation therapy, etc.
- Time to get a better sense of the various symptoms that can present, including covid toes, conjunctivitis, skin rashes, etc.
- Time to get ventilator production ramped.
- Time to reach warmer weather where we might see a decrease in the virus spread.
Those are all great points to the shut downs.
The point of gradual reopening include:
- Can't stay locked down forever or until a vaccine.
- Getting the economy going in a safe manner.
- Making sure the spread doesn't get out of control
- Making sure the hospital systems don't get overwhelmed.
- Testing reopening strategies and seeing what works and what doesn't.
- Rebuilding consumer confidence, which won't happen if cases skyrocket.

Danny, you do realize that everything you wrote did not exist in mankinds past right?
You just dont seem to get how the immune system works nor how viruses work.
Please go pick up a freaking textbook on the human immune system and how virus move through humanity.
Here is a hint. One of the beauties of the human immune system is its use of a threat as a means to defeating that threat. You and your ilk only stand in the way of the beauty which is the immune system.

We should figured all this out over the last 100 years with the countless flues since 1918. Furthermore, since so many flues are of Chinese origin, why do we continue to interact with the source?

Yes, remember the slogan in mid-March,
"Fifteen days to flatten the curve"
?
Practically every supported it then. The goal wasn't to reduce the total number of infections. The goal was to spread it out (lower hill, longer tail) so a sudden crush of COVID cases wouldn't overwhelm the hospitals.
Now they've long since achieved those objectives. Many hospitals in fact prepared expensively and wastefully for a "crush" of coronavirus cases that never materialized, and now medical workers are being furloughed, small and regional hospitals are closing. Mayo Clinic just laid of 30,000. So the lockdown enhusiasts want to keep it going on and on til they haven't just flattened the curve, they've crushed the economy and flattened the country.
We lost the plot.

Um...the point of the lockdown was to destroy the economy.
Nothing else.
