Wouldn’t pay a wooden nickle to listen to that baldheaded fake country western singer.

I can’t stand Barf Brooks. I love Hank Jr. and Jamey Johnson.

No one evidently can get a recording contract in country music unless they have a pronounced wounded whine sound in their voice. I can’t bear to listen to it anymore. They all sound just alike and that sound is bad.

I don’t agree that Clint Black was the big thing when Garth came along — they hit at the same time. Garth’s first album came out a couple weeks before Clint’s in the spring of 1989. Incidentally, I have a friend who has been in the music industry a long time and knows a ton of people across many genres. He says that, in general, there are still more sincere and genuine people in country than in other types of music, but there is no one anywhere in music more fake and insincere than Garth.

Why?

Women are very loyal fans. My wife has insisted on a Neil Diamond concert every time he comes to town. On his last tour, we saw him at Madison Square Garden at $250/ticket (and those were the cheaper ones available). Even though he hasn't had a hit song in about 40 years.

She would definitely want to see Garth Brooks if he came to our town. Even though he hasn't had a decent album since about 1991. His first three albums were pretty decent but then he took a Barry Manilow direction.

I call him the Barry Manilow of country music.

Garth Brooks has put out a lot of mediocre music over the years but as I mentioned further up-thread, his first three albums were actually very good and more in the style of George Strait, especially "No Fences" which is his best work in my opinion. After "Ropin' The Wind" in 1991, he went completely off the country reservation and became more of a middle-of-the-road pop artist with "sensitive" songs designed to appeal to females.

I'm not sure why he took that direction as he was definitely on a career trajectory that would have eclipsed that of any other country performer over time, including his idol George Strait.

During the 1990-1992 period, he was almost solely responsible for the meteoric growth of country music. I lived in Boston at the time and in 1990, they had zero country stations. Within two years, they had three and two of them were getting top Arbitron ratings with the 18-35 demographic.

Even to this day, country music is still the top radio format in the country and even though I don't listen to terrestrial radio, there are at least seven stations in Sirius/XM dedicated to country such as Prime Country, Highway, Y2K Country and Willie's Roadhouse.

Despite what you think of him, Garth Brooks definitely gets credit for getting country to a much wider audience, leading the way for many other performers such as Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw, etc. who have since surpassed even Brooks in terms of chart hits and concert tours.

Also, I believe Garth Brooks was a marketing major in college and so it big part of his early success was knowing to appeal to a broad audience. His early shows were more like what you typically see at a rock show and he knew how to pack them in.

But yeah, a mystery on why he suddenly changed his musical direction after all that early success. Very much like how Elvis Presley's first records were his best and then he coasted the rest of his career on schmaltzy pop songs and lousy movies.

Yeah I guess I’m sort of bias because I am a HUGE huge huge Hank Williams fan, just name a book on that guy and I read it and to me that will always be the diamond to which I compare all other country music and to me Garth always came across to me as a rodeo clown “Yeaaa haw! Jump up and click yer heels!” that kind of guy, but your right he did have an ear for songs, and yes the Mark Chesnutt version is horrific, it sounds like him and the whole band are on heroin lol lol. I always thought Trace Adkins should record that song because he could sure as hell hit that LOW part in the chorus. What really bugs me about country music today is it’s so damn patronizing though, they write songs aimed to intentionally make women cry or swoon, and they get these frauds who look like male models to shake their butt on stage while dressed like truckers, it’s so vomit inducing, it reminds me of Elvis at the end of his career where he basically became this male whore kissing all the women in the audience but I guess that’s where the money is.
