I used to live in California, working remotely for an employer in Illinois. I did programming and remote administration of a server farm. I paid Illinois income taxes (around 5%) compared to California’s 14%. Needless to say, I had to go to Court to pay Illinois taxes, but the US Supreme Court has already ruled on this issue, and it is the state where you are doing the work. I simply programmed on a remote computer (primarily Unix based mainframes), but California litigated like crazy, and had to pay my legal costs, as well as damages.
