1982: The flight of BA9 It was back in 1982 when a British Airways Boeing 747 flew into a cloud of volcanic ash over Indonesia. Due to the airborne particles ingested, all four engines shut off. Technology.org quotes the captain as saying:
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress.
With all four engines not functioning, the aircraft began to glide down towards the earth. Thankfully, one engine eventually regained function as the aircraft descended. While this wasnt enough for the aircraft to gain altitude, it was helpful in slowing its descent.

Which would be the Pacific?

Yup,I recall having heard this story years ago.I remember somebody who was on board saying that people were kneeling in the aisles praying.
Kinda reminds me of that Malaysian Airlines flight that disappeared. One wounder what the passengers were thinking in the final minutes (hours?).

As a 747 Captain I can say yes. It cant maintain altitude however, youll drift down continuously until you reach a runway (hopefully). Even with only one engine inop you are likely going to drift down to an altitude that the aircraft can fly based on the current gross weight.

Magnificent plane, though. When I see one, my eyes are drawn to it. I love the design.

Not good losing power going up or down, and I have done both.

One pilot told me years ago: “ the 747 has all the gliding properties of a brick.”

I think Warthogs are beautiful planes too. I don’t understand how people think they are ugly or ungainly.
I think they are beautiful. And not just because of their beautiful efficiency at what they do.
I love the twin tail. Always reminded me of a B-25. Love the engine pods. The straight wings that can’t slightly skyward remind me of the old A-1 Skyraider.
And that nose. When it has the shark teeth painted on it.
Yeah. Great plane.
