Some patients at a California childrens hospital have developed a rare inflammatory condition possibly linked to the novel coronavirus. The condition has also been reported in recent weeks in pediatric coronavirus cases in New York and the United Kingdom.
At least three patients at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles displayed signs of the pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome, or PIMS, which doctors have said is similar to Kawasaki disease, or a condition that causes swelling in medium-sized arteries throughout the body. Kawasaki disease, which primarily affects children and has less than 6,000 diagnosed cases in the U.S. each year, often leads to inflammation in the coronary arteries, according to the Mayo Clinic.
