Got a source for that? Seems like made-up head-canon. The father and son confronted him because they claim "they thought he was a burglar" isn't really sufficient for you to definitively say "yep, he was a thief."

Apparently, he was previously on parole for a violent crime for 5 years. Probably nothing we should concern ourselves with.
