The only thing I would point out is that Flu deaths are ALL estimated using an analysis of death certificates AFTER the season has ended. Influenza deaths are not reportable (except for pediatrics.)
The ONLY accurate measure will be a historical review of overall death rates on a year to year basis.
In the end, the issue with the virus isnt the death rate. Its the infection rate, length of stay in the hospital, and the disruption of the system. This has always been the case.
Counting deaths to determine the impact of the virus is a waste of time. The impact is economic. It always has been.
