BERLIN (AP) Florian Schneider-Esleben, a co-founder of German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk, has died, record label Sony said Wednesday. He was 73.
Citing fellow group founder Ralf Huetter, Sony said that Schneider-Esleben had been suffering from cancer, German news agency dpa reported.
Schneider-Esleben and Huetter started working together in 1968. In 1970, they founded the Kling-Klang-Studio in Duesseldorf and launched Kraftwerk.

Awesome band, so far ahead of their time. Not sure about that list, though, I’d put Neon Lights near the top.
In his 70’s, yikes.
I swear they were kids just yesterday.

I think the group DEVO was meant as a parody version of Kraftwerk.
No, Devo was a New Wave band with roots in punk. While Kraftwerk was trying to be Andy Warhol and Marshall McLuhan in its futurism (and taking it seriously), Devo was parodying bourgeois pop culture in a different manner, and were pretty much on the edge of being a novelty band. Their early backers were Brian Eno and Iggy Pop. Different branch of the electronica tree.
"Whip It!" doesn't quite catch the zeitgeist of the group. That would come more from "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid" and "Freedom of Choice". Their music videos were often quite creative, my favorite being "Love Without Anger" which features Barbie happily throwing things at Ken in stop-action before tearing Ken's head off.

Big Devo fan here. Whip it is not the song they should be known for.

Just checked them out on YT. “We Are the Robots”. Very weird, creepy electro-nazis. Like the back up band for “Metropolis” in case the beautiful, original score by Huppertz wasn’t available.

“vor uns lieght ein graus band; veisse streifen, gruner rand....”
Been stuck in my head for 45 years, since I was a HS freshman taking German... comes out every now and then (probably incorrectly).

Big Devo fan here. Whip it is not the song they should be known for. Given the current climate, I think "Freedom of Choice" would be more appropriate...

Vor uns liegt ein graues Band, weiße Streifen, grüner Rand...

Are we not men?
I knew people who knew people who knew them in Akron. With DEvo, Donny Iris, Michael Stanley, and others, Akron/Northern Ohio was just on the verge of becoming like Athens Georgia (B-52s, REM) in regards to US New Wave scene.
