My oldest Brother was an NRA member around 1960. He had to go through a lot of hoops to join.

Where Lennon got the idea for the Beatles song. Grimly ironic, considering the manner of his death.
Why couldn’t Chapman have taken out Yoko instead?
I remember that as I joined in 1968. Had to get a lawman, police officer or military officer’s signature to get me in.
I have a theory on that. I think Yoko ordered the hit.

He only had a gun on him, not a wooden stake.
Though John was a pretty awful person himself by every account. Not bad enough to warrant death, just a real jerk.
I never thought of that. You might have something there.
I base it on the fact, that John had an affair a few years earlier, and also some of the stories that he was “evolving” politically, namely that he liked Reagan. So, Yoko, may have sensed it as a threat to the “legacy”. No proof, but it’s just something I always wondered in the back of my head.
When I joined as a life member in the 80s I just had to have money.
