IMO, I don’t any unusual activity people are experiencing has anything to do with additional monitor citizen activity, the Government can already do that...

If you are on the Public Internet and use a cell phone or landline, they government knows everything about you if they really want to...

The way I see it, your only choices are to completely get off the internet and don’t use a phone, unless it’s a burner type of phone and I’m not sure how secure that is...

If you are willing to take a risk, get a new laptop, install TOR and use the Dark Web....

I surf mostly with my phone and use the UC Turbo browser. I HAVE bumped into the captcha requirement more over the last few days than normal.

No need for any changes to your existing PC or to get a second PC to use TOR much safer. I built an independent isolated bootable USB TOR stick using Linux installed on it as a full read and write OS along with the TOR browser. You just have to make sure that the internal drive cannot be mounted at all when using the stick. This stick will then be seen as a stand alone PC and the only drive on the system. It is a whole system in it’s self and just borrows the hardware. So if anything happens it can only happen to the independent isolated stick.

I’m only vaguely familiar with TOR. What are the issues surrounding it? Why should one worry using it?

In the near future, I am getting a new thinner laptop the current one is old, make the new one my main computer...

Re-image the current laptop with linux, install TOR..

I’m uncomfortable in combining TOR and the Dark Web on one machine, even if it’s safe, I just prefer to keep things separated

I’ve seen it too. I found myself unable to log into a site that was previously no issue. I tried it using a machine that had an older version of Pale Moon and got right in.

And that is the cool thing about linux, you can install it on an external as a full stand alone isolated system. My default laptop internal linux drive is encrypted. So there is absolutely no way it can be accessed or mounted at all when booted up on the USB drive and OS let alone be made sense of. And I figure it is a lot easier to make another stick if you get crud then needing to redo an internal system.

Everyone knows the powers that be are trying to get people onboard with “contact tracking”. This is the monitoring of people and who they are in physical contact with. Think of this as “Find your Phone/Friends” on steriods. Recently there was an app that could tell you who was in your general vicinity and if they were single. This app was quickly supressed but it did see the light of day. It is my firm belief this technology has been around for awhile and was being actively employed. Think of the reports how people would be talking and up pops an ad about whatever the conversation was about. There is more to this than people think. The “contact tracking” is just a way for this technology to get more of a legal foothold in America. You thought the NSA recording our conversations was scary, think of if they could record every move, every action that a person does in addition to their conversations. That is downright past Freddy Kruger terrifying. This has gone beyond the tin hat stage.

I sort of briefly looked over some article today about google doing away with 3rd party cookies or something like that.
They probably screwed up.

Sorry if this is a duplicate thought already expressed by others, I did not see it ... hope it is somewhat helpful. Certainly concerning the things you have noticed.

Do you not think it might be related to changes in “DNS over HTTPS”?

The issue is being forced this year by browser changes right at a time when suddenly many entities want to analyse online behaviors.

Here is a search about it, and other opinions. It is still in transition, has a lot of controversies, it is like using a VPN provider in that it transfers knowledge of details from one party to another that you hope you can trust, but it’s a new place for one stop shopping to spy on you. INstead of your ISP easily tracking you, a new encrypted DNS provider gets to spy.

Search:

https://duckduckgo.com/html?q=dns%20over%20https

Example article about how it is not necessarily as great a thing for privacy and security as they claim:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/dns-over-https-causes-more-problems-than-it-solves-experts-say/

Firefox turned encrypted DNS on by default in February 2020, I turned it off until I figure the implications more:

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/02/firefox-turns-encrypted-dns-on-by-default-to-thwart-snooping-isps/

Microsoft building it into Windows 10:

https://mspoweruser.com/dns-over-https-windows-10/

How to turn it on explicitly in all browsers (decent starting point):

https://www.zdnet.com/article/dns-over-https-will-eventually-roll-out-in-all-major-browsers-despite-isp-opposition/

If you wish to use OpenDNS for DOH (encrypted DNS), I have used them for a long time (on my router, this new system on most browsers will bypass your router DNS from your “new” browser with default encrypted DNS!) though I an not sure I trust them any more than any giant company:

This is a better explanation. And it is why I use an independent isolated stick and Linux OS. Not only can you assign it a different “Device” ID, if for any reason having TOR records might get you caught up in any investigations (which can happen by absolute accident just because you clicked a wrong site), all you have to do is hide or destroy a stick and not a whole PC in case it might be confiscated for evidence. Guilty of anything or not, IT WILL be used against you if they choose to.

You are absolutely right... If they mention that they “might, or are considering” implementing something then they already are doing it. And the bluetooth “contact tracking” is already happening without us knowing or opting in. For the last week my carrier keeps turning my bluetooth on a couple times a day and I have to keep going and shutting it back off. I NEVER use Bluetooth for anything ever.

I “accidently” have a “computer on a stick” setup. The hard disk on one of my laptops crashed and so I decided to try running it with a Linux Mint on a USB stick and it works reasonably well (a bit slower and no hard drive access). Luckily I had all my files backed up in Dropbox.

Thanks for your info.

Right on... that’s the way to do it. Too bad the stick would not also let you go access and grab your files from the internal drive on that machine. I highly recommend anyone having a windows PC to also have a Linux stick. If the windows OS fouls then you can boot from the Linux stick and still go access and save all your files off the drive if it is still good as to not lose them. :)

“Too bad the stick would not also let you go access and grab your files from the internal drive on that machine.”

It could if the internal drive hadn’t crashed.

I’ve gotten in the habit of using cloud storage for all my files, and it’s saved me a lot of hassle on several occasions when the laptop capped out for one reason or other. Plus I have access to the files on any device.

There are so many that are free for the amount of storage that I need.

I get it. :) I have saved a couple by booting from the linux stick and then copying the files off to other sticks, but the drives were still good. But I also later made a compact solid state external USB 2 Tb linux system drive that I can plug in and run on any machine including MAC and copy off all the files from most drives straight to the external. Or use it to install linux on machines and then put those files back. Fixed quite a few machines for the kids and friends with that handy drive because of the capacity.

Have pocket Linux will travel... :)
