More importantly is the #1 rule of Bible study: as the book is a spiritual book unlike any book written by man, IT IS LOCKED!
The human mind cannot crack it or understand it - and trying to do so will always come to incorrect conclusions.
ONLY THE HOLY SPIRIT can unlock the Bible to you, and all understanding of spiritual truth only comes from REVELATION as the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of your heart to see it.
Far more important than which Bible you use is this: every time you open the Bible, in your heart get on your knees and humble yourself before Him, and ASK HIM to open His Book to you, for the Holy Spirit to speak truth to your heart - and for God to reveal Himself to you.
I Corin. 2:10 - 14
And there is a #2 RULE: the whole book is about the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, and is a revelation of WHO HE IS......ask the Holy Spirit to show you Jesus. Do this, and He will.
Ephesians 1:15 - 17, Philippians 3:10-12
A few key principles of Bible study:
A verse taken out of context is a pre-text. Every scripture must be understood in the context in which it is written. You will often err to pull verses out and try to make them stand by themselves.
Scripture interprets scripture. A full understanding of any truth in scripture can only be understood along with other scriptures on the same or related subjects. Seek answers to your questions about passages or scriptures in scripture itself rather than going to commentaries, no matter how good the author is. It is better to seek to find your own answers in your own study. THEN go to the best commentaries to validate your own conclusions.
BECOME A SERIOUS STUDENT of the Bible on your own. Use footnotes, thesaurus, concordances. Learn to hear from God directly through His Holy Spirit, and then for confirmation and balance refer to godly and Christ-centered teachers.
