LANSING — A bitter dispute over Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s response to the coronavirus pandemic came to a head Thursday when Michigan’s Republican-led House authorized a potential lawsuit to challenge her emergency authority.
With demonstrators again gathered at the Michigan Capitol to protest Whitmer’s stay-at-home order, the House GOP rejected the governor’s request for a 28-day extension of a separate emergency declaration set to expire at day’s end and instead sought to limit her authority. (snip)
The drama, which included protestors carrying long guns inside and outside the Capitol, came one day after negotiations broke down between Whitmer and Republicans over her handling of the virus (snip)
Whitmer on Wednesday rejected a GOP offer to extend her emergency declaration by up to two weeks in exchange for a public promise to work with lawmakers on future stay-home orders.
“I'm not going to engage in political negotiations with anybody,” Whitmer said Wednesday. “We don't have time for politics and games when people's lives are on the line. I'm going to make decisions not based on negotiation, but based on facts and science and data and risk.”
