While sitting in a crowded stadium isn’t a good idea right now I doubt the drivers are in any danger sitting in their racecars.

Precisely.
If Fauci thinks piling 40,000 people into Yankee Stadium is a bad idea right now I would not disagree with him on that.
It’s not what he said.

I can’t remember the last time I watched a NASCAR race where the stands were full...

NASCAR has set guidelines to safely hold the events using CDC guidelines on social distancing and personal protective equipment. Only essential personnel will be permitted to attend the events, and cloth face masks will be required. The entire venue will be used to maintain distancing in garage stalls and where the haulers are parked.

why is sitting in a crowded stadium a bad idea?...the virus is making relatively few people actually sick, fewer still needing any kind of medical help and fewer still who actually need to be in a hospital...
same as any disease....
fearpers who are afraid can just stay home....

I doubt the drivers are in any danger sitting in their racecars. It's the pit crews that will be in close quarters, but they are all wearing the equivalent of hazmat suits (except for the crew chief).
The question is how to separate the spotters on the roof of the grandstand.
