Student Who Grew Her Own Canoe Out of Mushroom Thinks Fungus is Our Best Ally in Climate Change

“Mushrooms are here to help us—they’re a gift,” Ayers told NBC. “There’s so much we can do with them beyond just food; it’s so limitless. They’re our biggest ally for helping the environment.”

The canoe is made of mycelium—the dense, fibrous, underground material that links together the various fruiting parts (the toadstools we see on the ground or our dinner plates).

“...But mushroom people are NOT. “

Omgosh.

I watched that movie when only a youngster on a Saturday Afternoon Matinee Horror screening.

It caused me to avoid mushrooms in ANY form for decades.

We’re talking DECADES.

I could not be paid enough money to watch that movie again, and I’m in my 60s.

For some unknown reason that particular movie just tripped my mental circuit breaker.

Yes, I do eat mushrooms now. LOL

Still, wouldn’t watch that movie.

Very original and innovative. Good for her!

I concur. This is pretty neat and she clearly works hard and thinks outside the box.

P.S. - I love mushrooms!

“Sitting in a special room with temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and 100% humidity, it took only 90 days for the mushrooms to cover the entire skeleton of the canoe. :

It must take a lot of "fossil fuels" to maintain the special room at 90 degrees and 100% humidity for three months.

Birch bark or animal hides would be a lot more environmentally friendly. Even aluminum.

I would like to grow a mushroom canoe. I think it would be fun, and I’m a fun guy.

Everyone needs a hobby.

At least she's not volunteering at Murder Inc (Planned Parenthood) or doing drive bys.

Oh, Gus The Gardener’s gone now
And you went with him, too

The fungus here, reminds me of
The fun Gus is having with you.

Nobody else wrote it so....

...clearly she’s a fungal.

Equally, if you paddle enough it’s a shroom with a view.

100 lbs? I think our kayaks are 40 lbs each. And I looked for the lightest ones I could find.

I would like to grow some mushrooms, but not for that purpose.

I did that in my mis-spent youth, 40 years ago. It's not that hard... but you need the spores, and have to exercise a minimal amount of sterile technique to avoid contamination.
