Both Alaska (49th state) and Hawaii (50th state) joined the Union in 1959.

I know, but the last one to join before them was Arizona (my state) in 1912 or so. The original question had to do with how could Johnny's Cash's character in the song shoot a man outside of California and wind up imprisoned in another state. Reno, Nevada would not be plausible, so I mentioned Alaska and Hawaii as "new" states, meaning about to be come states at the time the song was released. Mainly, I was trying to be jocular.
