Rumours that Kim has died have been circulating since April 15, when he failed to attend celebrations marking the birthday of his grandfather, and Korea’s first Communist dictator, Kim Il-sung.

If he is simply laying low because of the Corona Virus, or some other reason, he could have released a video message to the people commemorating these events.

I think that Kim is using the reaction to his absence as a way to test the loyalty of his underlings and to demonstrate that without him, the regime might not survive.
