They earned it. Well he did anyway. The house is equivalent to us buying a 40,000 dollar house.

If he was just a super rich guy who minded his own, it would be fine. It’s the hypocrisy and the other, destructive actions he’s involved in that cause the backlash.

By the time we left California around a decade ago, the property tax on our home was 2% of the purchase price. I believe it has gone up from there. (Maybe the percentage depends on your zip code though) Just imagine what the property tax would be without Prop 13! (And yes, it does still hold the taxes down somewhat)

My husband taught for 30+ years at the high school just across I-5 from there, so we're very familiar with the neighborhood ... lots of students live there. We lived 25 miles north for most of our adult lives ... left the state in 2005 ... so glad to be out of there. I guess the Gates duo won't mind fighting the horrid traffic on 101 to get to their digs.
I never thought of beach-front living as desirable ... too many lookie-loo people on the beach in front of your house, and the view at night is non-existent. But that's just me. (Couldn't afford it anyway, lol.)

I was living up north, halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento. 😁 Glad to be out of California too.

I was gonna say. Al Gore, DiCaprio, the Obamas, and now Melinda & Bill Gates, have payed eye-watering amounts of money for oceanfront or island properties for themselves. I thought these "vulnerable" shoreline locations were supposed to be inundated in about 5 years?
Oh, I know. They're just buying them up out of sheer humanitarian concern so that poor people won't get stuck with flooded property.

Like Obama, they must not be worried about global warming and oceans rising.
