"I was out in the yard on tornado watch and got whacked by pingpong ball-sized hail."

I grew up in Kansas. Dad and I would do that from the covered porch, because we knew about the hail.

We'd always hear how it was the number one killer of livestock and pets in the state.

At least don't take it on bare headed. Use a motorcycle helmet or a hard hat... ;-)

Glad you're OK!

I have a hard hat -- but was (stupidly) more concerned about having a hood to keep the rain off.

Usually, I can hear the hail coming thru the woods, but, tonight, the ambient noise level was so high, it sneaked up on me. (And, I'm a Skywarn-trained tornado spotter with decades of experience...) :-{

Lesson learned!

ThanQ!

You might find this interesting. In the 70s, a hail research experiment on the high plains needed to measure the diameter of hailstones over an area, before they melted. The solution was to hire college kids to wrap foot square pieces of hard styrofoam with aluminum foil, and mount them on fenceposts in a grid pattern over a 10 square mile area. After a storm they’d collect the foam squares, measure the size and number of dents, and plot the data on a map. I thought it was ingenious, kinda like your hardhat only with science ;-)
