Because of the geology, earthquakes are felt for much longer distances here in the Midwest. Supposedly the New Madrid quakes of 1811-12 were felt as far away as the east coast. At the time, the area was sparsely settled, but St. Louis and Memphis with all of their old brick buildings could be devastated if the fault let go now.
