Disney+ is developing a female-centered Star Wars series that will be written and showrun by Lesley Headland, a co-creator of Netflixs Emmy-winning dramedy series Russian Doll.
Deadline has confirmed the gist of the series. While the exact plot is under wraps, but the series is understood to be a female-driven action thriller with martial arts elements and set in an alternate timeline from the usual Star Wars universe. Disney declined comment on the project, which was first reported by Variety.
It marks the latest Disney+ original series in the Star Wars universe, following the successful The Mandalorian created by Jon Favreau which is already underway on Season 3 ahead of its Season 2 bow. That too has a strong female element in Gina Caranos butt-kicking shock trooper-turned-mercenary Cara Dune.
Two other Star Wars series are in development at the Disney streamer: an Obi-Wan Kenobi series returning Ewan McGregor to the role from the prequel trilogy, and a Rogue One series based on the 2016 stand-alone feature film that returns Diego Luna as rebel Cassian Andor.
Headland co-created Russian Doll with star Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler. The dramedy was nominated for 13 Emmys for its first season, winning two. It was renewed for Season 2. The writer-directors other credits include the 2015 film Sleeping With Other People.
In December, Headland has signed a multi-year overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios to create, develop and direct series for network, cable and streaming platforms.
Sounds to me like Disney executives have no reason or accountability and can flush away a few hundred million down the toilet like it doesn’t mean a thing.
A flood of movies just cheapens the franchise.
Would say it was excellent but certainly the best film not part of the original trilogy... but that is a very low bar to beat.
“For myself I only watched up to THE LAST JEDI, and I give it a rating of 5 Barf Bags.”
I never would have believed I would have disliked a Star Wars movie more than Attack of the Clones. The Last Jedi basically destroyed that whole new trilogy.
I at least enjoyed The Force Awakens for what it was. I figured they could give the whole story some depth by making the middle story of the trilogy amazing. They did the exact opposite. I was wrong.
Rian Johnson had to work overtime to make that film the turd it was. The story was trash. The SJW garbage only made things worse. It didn’t do a damn thing to advance the story.
I am not kidding when I say that I’d rather sit through the Holiday Special before I ever watch The Last Jedi again. It was the last Star Wars movie I ever saw in a theater.
I finally got to see the latest one at home ... it wasn’t terrible, but it made no sense seeing that it followed up a gigantic pile of garbage. Sadly, the Pedorats @ Disney be giving Rian Johnson and that angry man Kathleen Kennedy more money to make more garbage. I just hope people don’t pay to watch their trash.
Agreed. Wish they would take a break from making Star Wars shows and movies.
I once heard a computer geek friend of mine said “if it weren’t for torrents movies, Disney wouldn’t have half the views for their crappy movies”.
I don’t doubt that.
