I really don’t give a damn what Pelosi’s refrigerators cost. She’s rich. Rich people buy expensive things. We can question whether she had an unfair advantage in getting to be super rich. We can ask whether she’s an out of touch fraud who doesn’t really care about the problems of ordinary people. All that’s OK. What’s not OK is the current fixation on her expensive lifestyle per se — as if it’s a social crime to be rich. The appeal to envy is evil and un American. Everyone on this thread would like to be that rich and enjoy such luxuries. Not at any cost, but all things being equal? Hell yeah. So let’s drop the class envy, please. It only confirms conservatives as the stupid party, always eager to embrace the assumptions and terms of discourse of its enemies.
