Good thing I was sitting in the back, she never saw me sneak out. See, I always sign my name in lower case printing...as a favor to my readers. I figured out right there that I, with my independent, "marching to the beat of a different drummer" attitude would not be a good match with the Air Force. Darn, and I would have been great as a translator in a foreign embassy! Of course, that was back in the day when they could lie to you about where and what you would serve...so who knows?
For those of you who served, you have my admiration and respect. Thank you.
I tell you the truth my parents were much tougher than my DI. Specifically my mom. DI Valdez and Walker couldn’t hold a candle to Mom. She raised 5 boys and 4 were in the military. My youngest brother didn’t serve and it shows.
The closest I got was when I met a cute crew member of the rainbow warrior. They were in DC for earth day and the a few guys from the cia i knew asked me to help them map out the ship. Spent a couple nights on that boat and never saw her again. Couple years later I showed a couple different guys how to hack into the frame relay switches and read the traffic in china. Fun times. Never served though.
My dad was 20 years Air Force. He talked me into going to college, I went for Computer Science. I had every intention of joining once I graduated. I would have gone for search and rescue then into special ops. Unfortunately that never happened, I got sucked into an software engineering job in my senior year. I did wind up graduating a year late.
Hat tip and utmost respect to our vets here. Thank for your service.
