TRs life shows us that hard work, tenacity, and a desire to do the right thing can get you far in life. In the most memorable section of his Citizenship in a Republic speech, Roosevelt captured his life philosophy in just a few sentences. The Man in the Arena tells us that the man we should praise is the man whos out there fighting the big battles, even if those battles end in defeat. In our day, when cynicism and aloof detachment are considered hip and cool, TR reminds us that glory and honor come to those who spend themselves in a worthy cause.
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
I think of President Trump when I read this.
You mean the guy that power-grabbed states’ land and facilitated the grotesque income tax?

TR was a globalist and actively undermined the constitution. That’s why he’s decrying critics. At the time he didn’t want to be slowed down while tearing down the protections the Founders gave to us.
How many people don’t get that?
Comes off like a macho man when in fact he’s a flaky freedom-and-Constitution-destroying Leftist. A warm up to his cousin FDR, who so many are also confused about, who codified TR’s unconstitutional avarice and set the stage for our current totalitarian 80%+ unconstitutional federal government.
I would say that most do not. Progressive historians teach touchy-feely human interest stories about TR on purpose while ignoring his deeds and actions.
The difference I think comes down to those who read TR, and those who read about TR. When circumventing the historical malpractice, one sees that he was quite open about his destructive activities, he states it in both speeches and articles and even seemed proud about it.
But those who only read about TR and do not read him first hand, they only know about San Juan Hill, know that he survived a bullet shot while speaking, and know that he hunted a lion. Oh yeah, and he loved football.
The personal stories do not overcome the damage done to the Republic and the legacy left by our Founding Fathers.
Well, I’ve really neither read TR or read about TR other than his love for the abominable income tax and his unconstitutional federal land grab in the name of “touchy-feely” “national parks”. That stuff is all I have to know to tell me the guy was bad news and a preview of coming attractions to the much worse FDR.
BTW, almost nobody gets what’s wrong and unconstitutional with national parks. But every so often they get a taste of it when the feds kick up their heels and start killing citizens in their unconstitutional land squabbles.
Also BTW, there’s only one constitutional provision for the feds being on state land that I know of, and that is Art. I, Sec. 8, Cl. 17, wherein the feds must get permission from the state legislature to BUY the land ONLY for the purpose of “Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings”.
Who knows this? And yet is the Supreme Law of the Land against the feds.

Exactly. After seeing this latest reply (7), I’m thinking he might appreciate the core of what I blog about - and probably the audio too.
I think you and I are probably in agreement on all of this. Including the parks.
Most of those parks were made by executive order, despite the wishes of congress. This is something I have written about, and I suspect that you might find my curiosity about early progressivism to be enlightening. My username is built around that concept.

President Trump is out there for us. It’s easy for the radical left to complain about everything he does, but theres no meaning in this.
It’s not so easy to put yourself out there and be
vulnerable. That takes courage.
