That was great music by The Tokens 60 years ago and it still is.

My mother had this 8 track when I was 6. I just texted it her and told her this reminds me of her and her powder blue Monte Carlo. That sing and Tossin’ and Turnin’ by Bobby Lewis
Thanks. Needed that

In the summer of 1964, this one made it into the Top 40 on KRLA (Southern California's rock blaster at 1110 kilocycles, not the conservative chatterbox of today, with the same call letters, at 870 kcs.). Note that they have moved away from their doo-wop roots and sound more like the Beach Boys.

“The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is a song originally written and recorded by Solomon Linda under the title “Mbube” for the South African Gallo Record Company in 1939. Linda’s original was written in Zulu.

I was so impressed by the soprano in the background. Gives me goose-bumps.
Like Janet Vogel’s sung coda to “Since I don’t have you.”

My mom had this on an original 45 and I am wondering if she still has it in her record case, which I am pretty sure she still has stored away in one closet or another.

In 9th-grade English class Don Otto tapped me on the shoulder and handed me his 45 of The Lion Sleeps Tonight. He said he was so tired of listening to it he never wanted to hear it again.

I was engaged to an Italian girl in Brooklyn who claimed to have been related to one of the Tokens AND one of the Starlghters (Peppermint Twist). It seems every doo-wop group in the outer boroughs got to get in on the action in that era.
