...my roommate was in so much pain he was crying and he was shaking and sweating so bad I tried to get him help with the base hospital - they said it was “normal” and to just monitor him...he was really ill for about 4 days. I remember it being so bad and so painful I couldn't even open my eyes because doing so was excruciating. I also remember my mom constantly taking my temperature and saying I was over 103 for days.

Yep - it was bad...I’m amazed more military didn’t die...but most were fairly healthy, hardy “studs” as far as general population went.
