back in the day (not sure what it is today )
you couldn’t bring fruit into California from Arizona

I was traveling on some back road in the Arizona desert to California and sure enough, in the middle of nowhere, there was what looked like a guard shack that was for stopping cars to check for fruit. It wasn’t manned that day.

Every time we’ve driven from OR to CA they make us stop and and ask about fruit, plants etc. But I haven’t crossed the state line for some years now, and also the small “bug staition” about 15 miles from here is never manned. Haven’t seen anyone there for at least 15 years.
