Stunning Satellite Images Reveal Pollution Plummeting Across Europe in Lockdown
Science Alert ^ | April 10, 2020 | EVAN GOUGH

The pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus is creating all kinds of chaos for human society. But for the dear old Earth, and the humans and creatures that breathe its air, it's a bit of a reprieve.

Mirroring what happened in China during lock-down, Europe is now seeing the same drop in air pollution.

This data comes from the ESA, and their Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite. It shows nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions over France in March 2019 in one frame, and between March 14th to the 25th on the next frame. Dense red indicates higher emissions of NO2.

Scientists from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) are using the satellite to monitor both weather and pollution over Europe. It's not only Paris that shows a large drop, it's also cities like Milan and Madrid.

The team of scientists used data spanning 10 days in 2020. Henk Eskes is one of the scientists from KNMI. In a press release, he explained why these dates were chosen.

Yes I expect them to push for changes in our economy, travel, industry etc based on this.

They won’t let this crisis go to waste.

Why, everything the enviroweenies ever said about pollution is really true, then. Stop most industrial and civilian activity, and the pollution problem - just goes away.

Gaia may return to her pristine primeval purity, and it only took a few weeks.

Of course, this pollution is disappearing ANYWAY, on a daily basis, but that is of no importance to the really serious adherents of anthropogenic global warming. To them, humanity is the problem, and must be eliminated, so the pollution never reappears.

Now, it is not known whether nitrogen dioxide, or any of the other nitrogen oxide compounds, are in any way contributing to either global warming or cooling, but the real truth of the matter, this is such a small fraction of all the atmospheric gases that its effect, either way, is insignificant to the point of totally negligible. On a very local level, the concentration may rise to the point of being irritating or even harmful or deadly to humans who happen to breathe it in, but the compound breaks down rather readily. or is formed into nitrates, which are a vital factor in soil fertility.

Not so fast, some record warm days recently in parts of Europe despite the shutdown. Apparently the narrative is being ignored by natural variability.

I wouldn't laugh. This will likely be their new solution to all our problems.

Just like I have been saying for years. The idea that the planet is forever destroyed is insane. If you simply turn off the pollution source it will only take weeks or months for major changes to appear.

I’ve noticed more animals around (e.g., wild turkeys and other birds we don’t usually see in town).

I’m guessing they are getting braver what with the decrease in car & foot traffic?

Probably the only good thing to come out of this pandemic is that special needs child Greta Van Scoldilocks is nowhere to be seen or more importantly heard. You got to know she is probably bashing her head against her Bedroom headboard not being the center of attention.

Wordless lying — that’s what those images are.

Today’s instruments are so sensitive that they can detect minuscule amounts of anything. Just add false colours, and you can create images that “prove” anything. Those same pictures could have been generated, even if the differences were a couple of orders-of-magnitude less than they are now. It’s a simple matter of assigning different colours or shades of colour to different intervals of data.

You cannot see those colours from space! These are not photographs — although they are intended to give you that impression. Actual air pollution (smog, etc.) is a tiny fraction of what it was 50 years ago. Many billions of dollars were spent to improve emissions standards, switch to clean coal, eliminate coal altogether, etc. That got rid of 90% of the problem — the recent changes are tiny, by comparison.
