I used to joke about how cool it would have been to have dinner with Tom and his wife Rickie Lee.

He dated Rickie Lee Jones for a while, but they never married. He has been married to Kathleen Brennan since 1980.

That was just an urban legend - way before there was even an Internet.

Rod Stewart put out some great music in his early days. Not a fan of his post 1978 works. "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" is the demarcation point for me but he was getting schmaltzy before even that.

Now speaking of early Rod Stewart, here is a hidden gem that I bet most Rod Stewart fans have never heard.

Python Lee Jackson - In A Broken Dream

Tom Waits & Rickie Lee Jones simply were "roommates" - never married.

She was on the back cover of his "Blue Valentine" album - another masterpiece and darn close to "Small Change"

Waits is amazing, for sure. Been a fan since the 1980s.

The first Tom Waits song I heard was “Step Right Up” on a local college radio station in early 80s...I was hooked forever!

However, after he married the woman he met on set of “One From The Heart” (the Coppola film he wrote the soundtrack), she moved him from jazzy-blues to more theatrical so I kinda lost interest.

If you’ve ever spent time in Paraguay, you’ll know Rod’s song, “Lost Paraguayos,” intimately. That song nailed it (so to speak).

It’s a great song. I agree it’s underrated. It’s just so simple, honest and sweet.

Tom Waits is a good choice and one of my favs, though I prefer Van Morrison over Tom, and young Rod over both.

First song of Tom's that I heard was this one:

Cold Cold Ground

Loved it: The gravel voice, the darkness, the accordion even worked!

Tom is definitely not for everyone. Mrs, Michael.sf says she hates him, but then again she likes: Tom Taubert's Blues, Heart of Saturday Night, Cold Cold Ground, San Diego Serenade, Ol '55...…….. He has a lot of good one's!

Unplugged and seated is a start. Add draped and muzzled and you might have a watchable show.

Coolest thing Rod ever did. Still doesn’t make up for Young Turks, Maggie May or Infaturation.

Awesome song. I like songs with the word mandolin in the title. Mandolin Rain is great, even though Bruce Hornsby is a radical nut.

Don’t have much but what I’ve got is yours
Except of course my steel guitar
Ha, ‘cause I know you don’t play
But I’ll teach you one day
Because I love ya
