In what is difficult to comprehend as anything other than delusional, a Planned Parenthood leader appeared to suggest that killing unborn babies is “more essential” than any other health care.
On Tuesday, Nancie Schwarzman, a board member of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England, insisted that abortions are important medical care – perhaps the most important health care of all.
“This health crisis is being used as a tool to shut down clinics, deeming many of our services, including access to abortions as non-essential care,” Schwarzman said, according to WPRI News 12. “Can you imagine anything more essential and time-sensitive?”
Though some of Schwarzman’s audience at an annual fundraiser luncheon for Planned Parenthood may agree, most of society would not. Ask the average person on the street, and they almost certainly could name dozens, if not hundreds, of medical procedures more essential than abortions.
Some of these procedures are being delayed right now because of the coronavirus crisis. According to the AP, cancer treatments, stents to prevent clogged arteries, dental work, infertility treatments, joint replacements and more are being postponed because of the pandemic. These are important health care procedures; they save lives, heal and relieve pain, but they are being delayed so that hospitals have more beds, equipment and staff to treat people suffering from the virus.
But in most states, elective abortions are still being done as usual. Alabama abortionist Yashica Robinson told a federal judge earlier this week that she is delaying hysterectomies, sterilizations and other procedures to focus almost solely on doing abortions right now.
And in Missouri, a pro-abortion OB-GYN recently expressed thankfulness that abortions are still being provided, while admitting that she is struggling to decide whether to delay surgeries for patients with painful gynecological problems.
“Our hospital is asking us to delay non-urgent surgical cases. I struggle to determine which cases qualify for this,” Dr. Amy Addante wrote on Twitter. “Fibroid patients with bleeding? Ovarian masses causing pain? Luckily, abortion care is not being impacted.”
But what is an abortion but the killing of a unique, living human being in his/her mother’s womb. Abortions are the opposite of essential, the very contradiction of medical care. They are destructive, life-destroying.
Recently, medical groups representing more than 30,000 doctors in America emphasized that abortions are not “essential” or “urgent,” and abortion facilities that continue to operate during the pandemic are being “medically irresponsible.”
“Currently, across the United States, services that do constitute essential health care for women, including routine Pap smears, mammograms, and pelvic exams, are being postponed in order to reduce everyone’s risk of exposure to COVID-19, and to conserve scarce medical resources,” the group of pro-life physicians said.
Further, if abortion were essential health care, one would assume that most OB-GYNs would provide them, but most do not. The medical groups pointed to statistics indicating that approximately 85% of practicing obstetricians and gynecologists do not do elective abortions.
Abortions are not “essential,” either. According to National Right to Life, “Women have cited ‘social reasons,’ not mother’s health or rape/incest, as their motivation in approximately 93% of all abortions.”
Nor are abortions health care. They do not save lives. They destroy them. Unborn babies are unique, living human beings from the moment of conception, and they deserve a right to life. Abortions also can put women’s health at risk. Common complications include infections, blood clots, hemorrhaging and an incomplete abortion where parts of the baby remain inside the mother’s womb. Abortion risks include future preterm births, breast cancer, suicide, anxiety/depression, and death. And it simply is not true that abortions are safer than childbirth.
“Abortion is not essential healthcare; it doesn’t treat a disease process,” said Dr. Christina Francis, an Indiana OB-GYN who chairs the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians & Gynecologists. “There are other solutions that we can provide to women who find themselves in very scary and uncertain circumstances right now.”
As unbelievably evil as it may seem, some people seem to outright worship the killing of unborn children – elevating abortions above all else in some warped, delusional worldview that claims to be compassionate. And it appears that the abortion industry’s goal is not really to help women in need. It is bent on destroying human lives.
