He wrote a lot of CW and folk music songs in the 1970’s and 1980’s. He also was performer but most of his stuff others made into big hits.

To me this is the classic John Prine song:
Sam Stone"Sam Stone" is a song written by John Prine about a drug-addicted veteran with a Purple Heart and his death by overdose. It appeared on Prine's eponymous 1971 debut album. The song was originally titled "Great Society Conflict Veteran's Blues".
