I don’t want to spoil anyone’s sci-fi fantasy, but a ventilator, aka “life support” is used to pump oxygen into the lungs when a person cannot breathe on their own. The process of intubation is described here:

A ventilator does nothing to cure any disease or condition, it only keeps the patient alive long enough for healing to take place. It is a very risky procedure that is only done as a last resort. The only reason Trump is having ventilators built beyond our needs is because even though our peak will have passed, other nations will need them and it is a great humanitarian thing to do. Most of the ventilators being used to sustain US covid patients will be returned to normal hospitals, clinics and ORs where many were borrowed from, and where they will be needed again.
