If Crozier didn’t go through proper channels first...how did the Navy release a statement on the ship before the letters which got to the press?

Somebody is lying.

The answer to that question will tell you exactly who.

My understanding he sent the email to 30 people. One of them leaked it to the press. I assume at least one of the thirty was in the navy and the navy immediately reacted. They just reacted faster than the press.

The Navy says he went through proper channels...and then went through improper channels - unsecure e-mails to unauthorized people - while the Navy was reviewing and responding, including giving him a direct invitation to contact the SecNav directly if he thought there was an obstacle or other unaddressed issue.

In this speech, he said the sailers back home felt demoralized by what the CO did because they were currently working on helping the crew. So, things were being worked on. Just obviously not as fast as the CO woukd have liked or needed.

.... the SecNav released a lengthy letter going into great detail as to the sequence of events and the reasons that led to the firing. No need need to speculate.

Both can be true.

He could have sent this up the chain of command while at the same time leaking it to others.
