Zaandam cruise ship still has no guaranteed port for sick passengers as Trump, Florida officials discuss plans
The Washington Post ^ | March 31 | Hannah Sampson and Josh Dawsey

Posted on 03/31/2020 6:56:02 PM PDT by Capt. Tom

On Tuesday, authorities in Broward County, Fla. — where the cruise ship with four dead and two in dire need of medical attention hopes to dock this week — said a plan presented by owner Carnival Corp. does not yet address all their concerns.

A representative for the U.S. Coast Guard said the Zaandam and an accompanying ship would not be allowed to enter U.S. waters without submitting “a complete plan for self-support of the medical issues occurring on board the vessels.”

At a meeting Tuesday, Coast Guard Capt. Jo-Ann Burdian said a “unified command” — a group of local, state and federal agencies — was looking to get concerns addressed and reach unanimous consent for the ships to dock.

The Zaandam and Rotterdam should be off the coast of Port Everglades late Wednesday or early Thursday.

I listened to PresTrumps virus update and got the impression he was leaning toward a "humanitarian solution" of the Zaandam's problem. -Tom

We should assist American citizens at minimum. We are evacuating citizens from the rest of the world so this should be no different.

Holland American has made proposals to solve the passenger problem. -Tom

From the article-
So far, the plan calls for arranging charter or charter-like flights out of Fort Lauderdale for passengers who need to be flown out of South Florida to international destinations and the West Coast, as well as transportation to the airport and passage through the airport so passengers don’t have contact with other travelers.

Those who have cars at Port Everglades would be allowed to drive home, and the cruise line would drive anyone who lives in South Florida but doesn’t have a car at the port back to their residence.

Why did this cruise ever start. They should have canceled the voyage.

I think originally it was supposed to be a three-hour tour.

The trip started on March 07; the Wuhan Virus wasn't declared a pandemic until March 11.

Not sure how anyone would have cars there? The ship’s itinerary shows it hasn’t been in Ft Lauderdale since October 2019?

Exactly, I’ve just been listening to that briefing, what he siad about this, he’s not going to turn them away rather find a solution.

The same “leaders” who are whining and without solution allowed thousands upon thousands of Spring Breakers to frolic on Florida beaches for weeks on end spreading the virus all over the place.

IMO a solution would be somewhere with fewer COVID cases..

Why did this cruise ever start. They should have canceled the voyage.

When the cruise started, there was no Government advisory not to get on a cruise ship.
A few days later the cruise lines cancelled all cruises but the Zaandam could not get any country to unload the passengers so they could fly home, because countries closed their borderers.
The Zaandam is hoping to unload the passengers in Port Everglades, Florida. Some Zaandam passengers have the corona virus which complicates the situation. -Tom

I know this may sound stupid, but rather than move international passengers through Ft Lauderdale, why not utilize the facilities at Guantanamo Bay? It’s isolated, has an airstrip, medical facilities, and is within 90 miles of the US. I don’t know if it has a deep-water port, but they could shuttle passengers to shore via launch, just like some cruise lines do to shuttle passengers to their private islands.

Just wondering?

I cannot believe in America this has taken so long. It’s outrageous that dead bodies are in refrigerators on a cruise ship. Shameful.

well, here’s the thing, those are ALL ships registered in foreign countries and almost their entire staffs are foreigners, so everyone who took trips on these things ignored the dangers of riding on foreign ships in favor of getting cheaper rides because those ships have to meet ZERO U.S. safety regulations, which is why they registered in foreign countries to start with ...
