He Missed his Masters Moment—and Robbed a Bank Instead
Sports Illustrated ^ | 30 Mar 2020 | JON WERTHEIM

As in the red dye spurting over his hands and tracing an arc, before splashing onto his rented Chevy Monte Carlo. An exploding cartridge, he would later realize, had been placed in the pile of bills handed to him by a teller at the Augusta bank he had just robbed with two strangers.

...In no shape to drive, he gave his dealers the keys to his rental car and jumped in the back seat. The three men headed to a Wachovia branch

And just as Crane reached his car, a few hundred feet away from the front exit, the packet exploded. “Holy s---!” came the chorus from the three robbers.

A freelance TV editor, Crane specialized in quick-cutting highlight packages that played within event broadcasts—the type that would embroider any big game—and his career was flourishing. That year alone, he recalls having already worked the Super Bowl, the Final Four and more than a dozen other events. Now he would be venturing to the most exalted golf course in the U.S., working for CBS on its commercial-free broadcast of “a tradition unlike any other.”

Had to rob a bank because his sports gigs were cancelled.

Commented too soon. Read the rest of the article and he robbed the bank in 2007.

I guess SI is running out of things sports related to write about.

How do you figure that? The article says nothing of the sort.

Crane’s ONLY answer in life is Jesus. I hope God arranges a Divine Appointment for him.

From only the headline, I expected this was another John Daly escapade.

This sounds like a tragic parable of someone who achieved some great things in life beyond his wildest dreams, and threw it all away.

there was a time when SI had some of the best writers anywhere. Then they became environmentalist and pushed other “social justice” causes. The magazine is a rag now and will crash and burn because of the internet.

I think Jesus is only interested in one more replay.

Those explosive packets should be rigged to take out the robber. Saves the cost of trials, appeals and incarceration.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug!

A big chief that I worked some years for and thought the world of, atheltic, gregarious, looked like the Marlboro man, sent a note that he was taking an out of town position...

I never heard from him again.

A friend married the Marlboro man’s ex-wife and I got the’rest of the story’.

He went to prison for beating his wife and young daughters!

Three years later he is out and living in his car, huge weight loss, teeth and hair, gone.

He would visit the ex-wife to beg for money!

When his drug debts exceeded welfare the dealer gave him a gun and told him to rob a bank. He did not get far.

Released from prison for hospice and died at (?) age 40.

Yes, cocaine is a hell of a drug!

Poking fun, not sniping. I’m actually a fan of Daly’s, but he does have a knack for insane situations.
