Los Angeles (AFP) - A resident of the western US state of Washington was arrested following a high-speed chase that left officers dumbfounded after they found the man's pit bull behind the wheel.

The incident unfolded Sunday afternoon after police received calls about a driver hitting two vehicles in an area south of Seattle and then speeding away, state trooper Heather Axtman told AFP.

She said the emergency services subsequently got multiple calls about a car traveling erratically at more than 100 miles per hours (160 kilometers per hour).

Axtman said that as officers gave chase, they got close to the vehicle -- a 1996 Buick -- and were shocked to see a pit bull in the driver's seat and a man steering and pushing the gas pedal from the passenger side.

The one I heard was the cop asked “Name?”

“Frieda Gomiss.”

“Your Frieda Gomiss?”

“Thanks, officer, bye!” Drives off.

Aren’t most dogs near-sighted? And partially color-blind, too?

Wish I could find the Farside cartoon to post here - an officer has pulled over a dog driving a car, owner in the passenger seat. The owner is saying, “Officer, he was on his leash the WHOLE TIME. I am NOT crazy, ya know!

I was mostly serious. It was my understanding that although there are a few sight-hunting breeds, most dogs are nearsighted. I had a golden retriever who seemed to squint to figure out if it was me coming the road until I was within 25 yards.

As to the color thing, I recalled reading that dogs have one less color of sensitivity in their cones. Two for them, three for humans.

Yes, dogs don’t see or even hear better than humans. Sense of smell is a whole different thing for them however. Just like a second set of eyes tuned to a chemical spectrum.

It’s been said that if you could tell by the smell from the next room that vegetable soup was being cooked on the kitchen stove, a dog, if it could talk, would be able to list the vegetables.

The dog had the same insurance, drivers license, and English comprehension as your average illegal - and used turn signals just as often. So I don’t see the problem.

Hmmm... Yes... I saw the dog immediately...

So, the dog behind the wheel gives the term "doggie-style" whole new meaning... Snicker...
