The statistics are nonsense. These countries aren’t doing widespread testing. The death rate of “people who show up sick at the hospital” is not the same as the death rate of all people who contracted the virus. Article after article has repeatedly stated that younger people often have almost no symptoms from the virus.
South Korea has done the most testing of any country and you don’t even show it on your list. Even though it is BY FAR the most relevant country to get this statistic from. The death rate is about 1%.
It is true that smokers, the immuno-compromised, and senior citizens are at higher risk with a higher death rate. Society shouldn’t shut down completely to protect a small segment of the population. Those people themselves can stay at home, wear facemasks, wash their hands, etc. without affecting the economy much at all. We can put state resources into giving the elderly and immuno-compromised support during this time. Smokers, well, they got themselves into the mess, they can get themselves out of it.
