Nipsey Hussle’s legacy endures a year after his death

LOS ANGELES - The year since Nipsey Hussle was gunned down has not diminished the rapper’s legacy, but rather cemented it and continues to prove true his catchphrase, “The Marathon Continues.”

Tuesday marks the first anniversary of Hussle’s death and his popularity and influence pushes forward as strong as ever. He won two posthumous Grammys in January, he remains a favorite of his hip-hop peers and his death has reshaped his hometown of Los Angeles in some unexpected ways.

Throughout the city, murals dedicated to Hussle have been painted, rival gangs have had peace talks and a group of men convene in a cross-country book club to discuss books recommended by the rapper.

“It shows you how powerful and great he is,” said DJ Khaled, who won a Grammy with Hussle and Legend for “Higher” for best rap/sung performance. Hussle’s song “Racks in the Middle” featuring Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy took home an award for best rap performance.

I think it’s fitting that for the most part, this thread is a remembrance of Nipsey Russell, rather than that no-talent thug, whoever he was.

Nipsey Hussle was an LA rapper and a member of the Rollin’ 60s Crips street gang. I wasn’t familiar with his music (though I do listen to rap) but he apparently gained a lot of respect for some of his charitable work. He stayed in the community where he grew up, reportedly bought shoes for local school kids, paid to renovate area basketball courts and playgrounds, and funded funerals for local families who had lost members to violence.

Really pisses me off that thug would try to use a name based on a class act like Nipsey Russell.

He was actually a pretty good influence.

He was very anti-gang and a successful entrepreneur and preached that work was the way out for the underclass. He invested in problem neighborhoods trying to bring in jobs and get the youth off the street.

If you’re in a gang I am assuming there is no time for a job?

I chortle every time I see THAT name ...

How old do you have to be to understand that “Nipsey Hustle” is a take-off on ‘Nipsey Russel’ (a black comedian from the 60s)

The main reason this asshat gets any lingering face time in the media is because he was one of the characters behind the "F Donald Trump" song that was played everywhere back in 2016. He can rot.
