Having been kicked out of several positions by the “Deep State” over the years, I can tell you that if you want to operate at the level these two have operated, you have to become part of [them]. However, one can have a change of heart that causes a change in behavior, i.e. repent of your sins. Saint Paul was “Deep State” before his encounter with Jesus on the Road to Damascus.
My sense, call it a word of knowledge, is that, at a minimum, these two have been shown just how bad the Deep State is and have changed sides. They are now under President Donald Trump’s control and protection. So it no longer matters what they were in the past.

I have noted a tendency among hard science professionals to be more about their professions than the politics — engineers, doctors, the tech research folks. They may have some politics, but those take a back seat to the demands of their profession when things get serious enough.
Frankly, they could be sporting black masks and marching with Aunt Teefa on the weekends, as long as when they are on the job, they give 100% of your brain and effort to being the best epidemiologist you can be...
