it’s ramping up a bit in Calif :

The number of ICU admissions, which rose overnight from 200 to 410, may seem relatively small in a state the size of California, “but the (percentage) increase was not,” the governor said.

The hospital and ICU admissions affect the state far more than an increase in cases, Newsom said, because they directly hit at California’s ability to provide care to the people most in need.

from the same article, a snapshot of American Spirit - let’s replicate this:

But state innovators and entrepreneurs also are stepping forward with solutions and science to beat back the crisis, including Bloom Energy, which converted an empty Silicon Valley warehouse into a facility with volunteers to fix outdated or broken ventilators — despite knowing nothing about ventilators a week ago.
“In Silicon Valley, all we need is a challenge and a deadline,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said.

Not every state has the money or expertise to do that.

I’m glad I live in a state that does. In fact CA is looking prescient with their early social distancing. Their per capita numbers are far better than anyone expected.

Quite a feat, so far, considering it’s 40 million people and has served as the gateway to China for decades.
