Harlem Globetrotters legend Fred "Curly" Neal died Thursday. Mannie Jackson, who once owned the Globetrotters, confirmed Neal's death to The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears.
He was 77.
According to the team's official website, Neal made more than 6,000 appearances across the country from 1963-85. The Globetrotters retired his No. 22 jersey in 2008, and he was the fifth person at the time to receive the honor.
TMZ Sports provided a statement from Globetrotters general manager Jeff Munn: "We have lost one of the most genuine human beings the world has ever known. His basketball skill was unrivaled by most, and his warm heart and huge smile brought joy to families worldwide. He always made time for his many fans and inspired millions."

I got to see them a few times in the 70s. What an entertainer.
Yep, back in the day when you could name all the members of the Globetrotters.
The HG’s were nothing more than a basketball circus act. You’ve seen it once you’ve seen it a million times.
Boring as hell.
I was amazed as well. The percentage of everything they did just as planned was mind blowing.
The Star Center on my High School Basketball Team was a member for a number of years on the hapless Washington Generals which was the patsy team the Globetrotters played most of the time. His name was Barry Weston.
I loved watching them play back when I was a kid. I got to meet another player Geese Ausbie at a stamp show in Little Rock. He was signing autographs and I got to talk to him for some time.
Geese is still with us.

Sad. I loved them as a kid.
Loved the Harlem Globetrotters as a kid. RIP Curly Neal.
I enjoyed watching:
“The Globetrotters”, “The Redheads”; and “The King and His Court”.
There is an interesting story out there somewhere
about when it finally dawned on Eddie (The King) Feigner
that they needed to add a fourth man to the team
after they had the bases loaded and
no one left to come to the plate to bat.
In 1967 Feigner struck out Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Brooks Robinson,
Roberto Clemente, Maury Wills, and Harmon Killebrew all in a row.
Condolences to family and friends of Curly Neal. Thank you, sir. R.I.P. love
Ditto on both.
They almost never missed a shot, and I wondered as a kid why they were not playing in the NBA, lol.
Seems like Curly was the one to do the “hook” from half-court corner.
They inspired me to try a baseline to baseline shot.
After 15 tries, I got it!
RIP Curly
The Trotters played everywhere in the 70’s. Big arena’s and small town HS gyms. They put on a great shown everytime no matter if the crowd was 200 or 10000. A national treasure. RIP Curly and Meadowlark Lemon!
Yep. Glad I saw the Globetrotters when it was Meadlowlark, Curly and Goose.
They were goodwill ambassadors for the entire world. The pallbearers should include at least one of the Washington Generals, as they bore the losses and furnished the victims to the Globetrotters!
R.I.P. to a master dribbler, Fred ‘Curly’ Neal!
Kind of like what the Congressional Republicans do.
The money they raised for charity alone was outstanding asswipe
RIP Curly. I have great respect for a bunch of guys who would come all the way to Michigan Tech to entertain the students. It was a fun show.
(And so was their cartoon)
Great theme, too.
