It held powerful people to account. It was beholden to nobody. A pro-Trump billionaire bankrupting a media empire with relative ease sent a chilling message to journalists. What they were doing wasn’t free speech. Thiel and Hogan didn’t take down Gawker. Gawker took itself down. A judge said they had to remove the video. They refused to comply with the judge’s order. Now they are bankrupt. No one to blame with themselves.
