Patagonia 8K explores the beautiful and rough landscapes of southern Chile and Argentina. Shot in 8K resolution on a medium format camera it's aimed to deliver the most realistic experience.
Shot in 6 weeks, travelling over 7500km from Santiago to Punta Arenas we captured roughly 100.000 still frames that combine into this timelapse video.
Wow. Great video.
8K resolution is one thing. But it could have been just as good in 4K if you had 60 frames per second, which results in extremely smooth motion that is much more realistic, in my opinion.
Content wise it’s not a bad video, but I am watching in 4k on a color calibrated 4k monitor (Rec709 space). Frankly I am not super impressed with the video quality. It’s decent but not outstanding, likely because YouTube applied lots of compression after upload.

4k/60 does look great, but not all 4k are the same. 4k from a quality camera (eg Sony or Panasonic mirrorless) will look a lot better than 4k taken with, say a phone. There are other factors too like how the video was processed and how much compression was applied to it. The camera this Patagonia video was taken with is high end no doubt but unfortunately all the post processing degraded quality. I will bet the original video on the creator’s computer looks stunning.

I love my GH4.
Wished I had reasons to use it to do what it’s truly capable of. It gets turned on every so often. Mostly to document the jalopies I sometimes work with.
Once every so often an attempt at peddle-able stock footage.
The first time I saw footage from the Gh4 I was blown away by how good it was. Nothing in that price range came close for video quality. A year later the Gh5 arrived on the market, which improved upon the already great Gh4. I came close to buying the Gh5 but kept postponing it. Good thing I did because last year Panasonic announced the S1 - all the Gh5 goodness in full frame. This time I couldn’t resist. What a tremendous camera, to borrow a word from Trump.
